CARE AT HOME
Vacuum regularly. How often depends on your home and your situation. It could be once a month or it could be every day. Keeping a rug clean to prevent dirt and grit from being ground into the rug and its foundation will extend its life greatly.Using a hand held tube vacuum (canister with tube and wand) rather than a beater bar (rotating brush on floor) will also be much better for the rug over the long term.
If a rug gets a lot of exposure to direct sunlight over part of the rug, rotation of the rug (180 degrees) after a year or two is not a bad idea.
WASHING
Rug washing is similar to vacuuming in that how often depends on your home and situation. In some situations once in ten years is fine, in others once year is not often enough. You be the judge. This being said, many people do not notice a rug getting dirty over time, as it often happens gradually over years. When the rug is washed the original rich colors of the rug are revealed once more and it may seem as though their rug has been reborn. If the rug is washed a bit more often these colors can be enjoyed all the time. Proper washing does not harm a good rug in any way and not having dirt and grit in the foundation of a rug will extend its life significantly
MOTH PREVENTION
The most common cause of damage to rugs is moths. Wool moths eat wool and most rugs are wool. Moth infestations are preventable and curable. As in most things, the prevention is usually easier than the cure. There are many chemicals and treatments against moths. We don't advise any of them. They give people the illusion of being permanent which they are not. In most cases they are also not good for the health of humans and pets in the home.
The best prevention in the home is to keep rugs out from under heavy low pieces of furniture, i.e. beds, sofas, and especially other heavy pieces which will rest flat on the rug. If rugs must be under pieces of furniture, frequent vaccuming under them will help greatly. In general frequent vaccuming in the home and professional washing are the best prevention and cure for wool moths.
STAIN PREVENTION & REMOVAL
Almost every carpet sees spills or other types of accidents at some point in time. The secret to stain prevention is quick blotting up of the spill if possible with a towel or rag, or adequate dilution with tap water before the spill dries. Any amount of water that will not harm the floor will not hurt a good quality vegetable dye rug. There are some synthetically dyed rugs that will run dye so one must be careful in these cases. Once you have diluted the spill it is best to bring the rug in for washing while it is still wet before the stain may have a chance to set. In the case of smaller spills or accidents this may not be necessary if between blotting and dilution enough of the substance is removed.
